TONGUES ENTWINED: WHERE BLACK ARTS MEETS SUFISM

MARCH 24-25, 2023

8PM @ THE CITADEL

Citadel + Compagnie is thrilled to have our presenter-in-residence back for their three-part performance series.

Rodney Diverlus is a multidisciplinary performer, choreographer, write, and curator. As a performer, Rodney has worked with KasheDance, IFT/Obsidian Theatre, ReActive Dance Theatre, Wind in Leaves Collective, Gadfly, Marie-Josee Chartier, and with a wide array of choreographers, including Arsenio Andrade, Hannah Kiel, David Earle, Vicki St. Denys, Mindy Cooper, Patti Wilcox, Kenny Pearl, amongst others. They will be presenting a reworking of a segment from his work "sagittarius, meet capricorn", a section reworked as a solo. This work draws inspiration from the celestial wonders associated with winter; aurora borealis, and fantastical imagining of Sagittarius' meeting with and passing of the "baton" to Capricorn.

Meryem Alaoui is Artistic Director of Jasad Dance Projects and is a dancer-choreographer from Morocco, living in Toronto. Her work is often an invitation towards a sensorial experience of dance. She will be presenting some of her research explorations on various Moroccan devotional music and dances, using movement, voice and poetry/incantations.

The collective's artists will perform 'whispers' with music composed by Judith Manger and choreographyby Kevin A. Ormsby and Lilia Leon. the performers for this will be Bakari Lindsay, Claire Whitaker, Charles C. Smith, Walter McClean and Rachel Gauntlet. 'whispers' presents a journey to self-discovery through the veils of Blackness.
