Allan Wolf will present his latest non-fiction graphic novel about the Lake Peigneur Texaco drilling disaster. In a starred review, Kirkus calls THE VANISHING OF LAKE PEIGNEUR "a riveting page-turner that will have readers eager to learn more." Allan will give a detailed (family-friendly) account of the disaster itself as well as the six years of research he has done interviewing survivors. A Q&A and book signing will follow.
A Little About the Disaster
In the fall of 1980 Texaco began exploratory drilling in a small freshwater lake in southern Louisiana. When the 14" drill bit accidentally pierced a cavernous salt mine below, the lake began to drain like a bathtub, creating a spiraling vortex that sucked down eleven barges, two oil derricks, a tugboat, a handful of houses, 120-foot tall trees, and sixty-eight acres of land. And that was just the beginning! The Lake Peigneur Texaco disaster of 1980 may be the most dramatic disaster that no one has ever heard of.
