Join us to celebrate the release of The Vanishing of Lake Peigneur: A Graphic Novel Based on a True Event by Allan Wolf, in conversation with e. Dulemba, Director of Graduate Programs in Children's Literature and Illustration at Hollins University. With special Cajun-inspired food and live music! On November 20, 1980 Texaco began drilling for oil in the middle of a small lake in Southern Louisiana. When the 14” drill bit accidentally pierced a tunnel in a salt mine below, 3.5 billion gallons of water began rushing to fill the void. The resulting whirlpool drained Lake Peigneur, like a huge bathtub, in a matter of hours, taking with it eleven 100-foot salt barges, two oil derricks, huge trees, several buildings and homes, a tugboat, and 68 acres of a nearby botanical garden. And that’s just the beginning of the story!
Author and poet, Allan Wolf, has been researching the details of this little-known disaster for several years, including sitting down to interview a few survivors. The result is a non-fiction graphic novel that Kirkus, in a starred review, calls “a true account of an astounding disaster, chronicled as a graphic narrative that reads like an environmental thriller.”
Allan will be sharing the jaw-dropping details of the disaster itself and the equally interesting story of his research into this astounding and fascinating tragedy. Chef Midas will prepare some special southern Louisiana cuisine that will be available for sale. There will be a bit of musical entertainment, and Dr. e. Dulemba, of Hollins University, will be in discussion with the author.
Books will be available for purchase!
