All bags, backpacks, carry-on luggage will be subject to searches: best to leave your unmentionables at home.
Prepare yourself for another year of unhinged thrills, bleary-eyed deliriousness, slaphappy hijinks, and soupy-eyed ghouls! Dress to distress as we will be judging your costumes! Warm up your Letterboxd account, gather a group of your most diabolical friends, and get ready for a supernatural showdown of screenings. Prizes will be given (both good and bad)!
This year’s AFN was curated by Jake Gallo, aka Strong Knotz, an independent local filmmaker and panelist/moderator at Crypticon in Seattle. He is also the host of Video Psychosis, a film podcast based out of Olympia WA, and has written for Nut Hole Publishing in addition to curating and hosting over 30 free community film screenings and VHS swaps since 2019.
Additional curation is courtesy of Jesse Knight. Jesse Knight is the lead programmer for Palm Springs International ShortFest. Things that scare him: the deep ocean, unread emails, Return to Oz (1985), dentists.
Film One:
The Original Home Security Ghoul (2023)
Keep your house and family safe with the Original Home Security Ghoul!
Dir: Andrew Lippincott / US / 7 min / Programmed by Jake Gallo
Film Two:
Freaks (1932)
The most transgressive film produced by a major American studio in the 1930s, Tod Browning’s crowning achievement has haunted the margins of cinema for nearly one hundred years. An unforgettable cast of real-life sideshow performers portray the entertainers in a traveling circus who, shunned by mainstream society, live according to their own code—one of radical acceptance for the fellow oppressed and, as the show’s beautiful but cruel trapeze artist learns, of terrifying retribution for those who cross them. Received with revulsion by viewers upon its initial release, Freaks permanently damaged Browning’s career but can now be seen for what it is: an audacious cry for understanding and a singular experience of nightmarish, almost avant-garde power.
Dir: Tod Browning / US / 62 min / Programmed by Jake Gallo
Film Three:
Popcorn (1991)
From the brilliant minds behind Dead of Night and Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things comes the hilarious and bloody love letter to movie theaters that is Popcorn! When a group of film students devise a gimmick-filled horror movie marathon at an abandoned cinema, they unwittingly wander into the sights of a murderous psychopath who’s all too happy to use their props and tricks to his own deadly ends. Both a glorious tribute to the cinema antics of William Castle and a thrilling slasher satire all its own, Popcorn is a delicious bite of movie-loving magic—dig in and enjoy the show!
Dir: Mark Herrier / US / 91 min / Programmed by Jake Gallo
Film Four:
Your Own Flavor (2025)
After being stood up on a date, Renee is grateful to find solace in an unexpected friendship with a puppet named Chompers.
Dir. Alisha Ketry / US / 11 min / Programmed by Jesse Knight
Film Five:
RAT! (2024)
When a disgruntled music journalist accuses a global pop star of queerbaiting, the singer’s devoted fans descend on his remote cabin to wreak havoc and seek retribution.
Dir. Neal Suresh Mulani / US / 16 min / Programmed by Jesse Knight
Film Six:
The Brood (1979)
A disturbed woman is receiving a radical form of psychotherapy at a remote, mysterious institute. Meanwhile, her five-year-old daughter, under the care of her estranged husband, is being terrorized by a group of demonic beings. How these two story lines connect is the shocking and grotesque secret of this bloody tale of monstrous parenthood from David Cronenberg, starring Oliver Reed and Samantha Eggar. With its combination of psychological and body horror, The Brood laid the groundwork for many of the director’s films to come, but it stands on its own as a personal, singularly scary vision.
Dir. David Cronenberg / Canada / 92 min / Programmed by Jake Gallo
Film Seven:
/HAAW/ (2024)
A typical day at a ski resort takes a bizarre turn when a xenophobic guest shares a gondola with an unusual family.
Dir. Joey Scoma / US / 12 min / Programmed by Jesse Knight
Film Eight:
Dream Creep (2024)
A couple awaken in the night to sounds emanating from an unlikely orifice.
Dir. Carlos A.F. Lopez / US / 13 min / Programmed by Jake Gallo
Film Nine:
Cruel Jaws (1995)
He defied all laws of good taste and international copyright with Terminator 2: Shocking Dark and Robowar. He reset the bar for batshit Italo horror with Rats: Night of Terror. And in 1995, Bruno Mattei stunned the world with Cruel Jaws: the ultimate sharksploitation saga. Filmed in Florida with a cast of unknowns (including a Hulk Hogan lookalike), this film liberally borrows characters, plot, and footage from a number of other Italian sharksploitationers…and more famous sources. Experience the epitome of outrageous Italian rip-offs, now remastered and uncut for the very first time!
Dir. Bruno Mattei / Italy / 97 min / Programmed by Jake Gallo
Total Running Time of Films: 6 hours and 40 minutes.
Accessible Seating:
When purchasing tickets in advance, mark “Wheelchair / Accessible.” Accessible seating sections are located on the main floor in various areas for sight, hearing, size, and mobility needs.
