Sea Shanty Alert!
Do you want to learn about sea shanties and see performances of different kinds of songs? You’re in luck!
Join us next Thursday, March 4th at 7pm EST on the Niagara Facebook Page, @flagshipniagara, for a Special Sea Shanty Session of our Free Online Sail Training Program.
The Special Session of Niagara’s Online Sail Training Course will be Live on the Niagara Facebook page. It will be hosted by Captain Chris Cusson and led by performer and educator Nicole Singer. Nicole will share about the different types of traditional sea shanties and the work they were used for on a sailing ship. Nicole will also perform a song to illustrate each type of sea shanty and how they were used to coordinate work. This will be a fun session with a mix of history and performance.
Nicole is a talented musician, performer, educator, organizer, and artist in Western Massachusetts. As a former deckhand and onboard educator on traditional sailing ships, she sings chanteys, foc’sle songs, ballads, pub songs, and plenty of other traditional folk songs... anything that gets people singing together! She sometimes accompanies herself on guitar or rhythm bones. Nicole is a co-founder and organizer of Youth Traditional Song Weekend, co-author of the CDSS Folk Sing Starter Kit, and the Chair of folk music and song programming for NEFFA. She can usually be found singing, teaching, and dancing at music festivals, camps, house concerts, and pub sings all over the Northeast, and sometimes beyond. When she is not singing, Nicole is an elementary school art teacher.
