About this Event
Recycling is vital to the health of our planet, and for 10 years, the Waste & Recycling Visitor Education Centre has been helping local families learn more about how it works and what they can do to improve how they reduce, reuse, and recycle now and in the future.
To help us celebrate this anniversary, we’re inviting residents in Gateshead, Sunderland, and South Tyneside to join us on 12th October 2024. Drop in any time between 10am and 2pm.
Fun activities for all the family
There’ll be a range of activities to take part in:
- Making recycled newspaper seed pots
- Taking part in a home composting workshop
- Meeting birds of prey
- Looking around and finding out how a bin wagon works
- Plus interactive art and craft activities to get involved with
Clothing Swap Shop
We’re also hosting a Swap Shop for clothing, shoes, and accessories, so that you can refresh your wardrobe sustainably:
1. Bring along your pre-loved clean clothes, shoes, and accessories (They must be in good condition and please do not bring underwear or earrings due to hygiene reasons)
2. Swap them for treasures you'll love.
Foodbank donations
Finally, we will be accepting donations of food items during the event to support local foodbanks. This is an opportunity to check your cupboards and donate any surplus food to people in need. We will be accepting the following items. All must be in date and unopened.
· Breakfast cereals
· Soup
· Pasta
· Rice
· Pasta sauce
· Tinned beans
· Tinned meat
· Tinned fish
· Tinned vegetables
· Tinned fruit
· Tea or coffee
· Sugar
· Biscuits
· Snacks
We’re looking forward to celebrating 10 years of educating our community about reducing, reusing, recycling and waste management, and we hope to see you there!

Waste and Recycling Visitor Education Centre, Springwell Road, Wrekenton, Gateshead NE9 7XW.
The site is not accessible on foot or by public transport. Parking is available on-site. We encourage car sharing if possible.
· When you arrive, you need to turn right at the roundabout towards the site’s offices and report at the weighbridge. Pleaase note there are traffic lights.
· Next drive through the barrier and turn right at the roundabout. You will see the car park straight ahead.
· Please reverse park into a parking space.
