About this Event
Welcome to the All About Love Reading Group!
We hold assumptions about what love is or should be. Unknowingly, we often undervalue or misunderstand its nature, meaning, and the radical power it has for personal, community, and cultural transformation.
In their seminal work All About Love, bell hooks offers new visions of love and its force in our lives with remarkable clarity, insight, and candor.
We will embark on a joint reading of All About Love to create a space for participating artists and the public to come together and engage in a conversation about love and art through themes of clarity, honesty, community, mutuality, loss, and healing. A panel discussion will further offer a space for reflection on the nature and meaning of love in their practice.
We will host three sessions, exploring the following chapter/themes:
Session 1, 16 November (Sunday), 3-4 pm; Clarity (Ch 1) and Honesty (Ch 3)
Session 2, 23 November (Sunday), 3-4 pm; Community (Ch 8) and Mutuality (Ch 9)
Session 3, 30 November (Sunday), 3-4 pm: Loss (Ch 11) and Healing (Ch 12)
About the book:
All About Love: New Visions (2000) is the first book in bell hooks’ “Love Trilogy,” introducing her definition of love as an ethic of care, respect, honesty, and commitment; a radical alternative to the romance-obsessed culture she critiques.
About the hosts:
Nevena Jevremović:
Nevena Jevremović is a Lecturer in Law at the University of Aberdeen. She has a special interest in the relationship between law, literature, and emotions.
Michael Hautemulle:
Michael Hautemulle examines how finite time informs systems of value. Working through sculpture in its expanded sense, she explores productivity, pleasure, ethics, and aesthetics, asking how, in our mortality, we consume and are consumed by time.
