About this Event
How do we see ourselves in a city shaped by movement, migration, and layered stories? In this hands-on workshop, participants will reflect on their sense of place and identity through the lens of photography. Led by artist Jeilin Espinel, the session invites a visual response to the complexities of living in a multicultural city, where personal stories are often shaped by place, fragmented, or reimagined.
Its first iteration happened in Little Haiti, Miami, and the workshop now arrives to Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Open to all. No prior photography experience is required. This workshop is especially resonant for anyone who has ever felt out of place, in transition, or in the midst of self-redefinition.
¿Cómo nos vemos en una ciudad moldeada por el movimiento, la migración y las historias superpuestas? En este taller práctico, los participantes reflexionarán sobre su sentido de pertenencia e identidad a través de la fotografía. Dirigido por la artista Jeilin Espinel, el encuentro propone una respuesta visual a las complejidades de vivir en una ciudad multicultural, donde las historias personales suelen ser formadas por el entorno, hasta fragmentarse o reinventarse.
Realizado por primera vez en Little Haiti, Miami, el taller llega ahora a Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

About the Workshop
The session begins with an introduction and guidelines from Jeilin to frame this photographic exploration. Participants will then walk along an established route titled The Zone of Loss, crossing key points of Williamsburg. This path is designed to spark reflection on memory, absence, and the layered traces of migration in the city.
Individually or in groups, participants will capture images that resonate with their reflections and lived experiences. Upon returning, each participant will select three photographs that best express their exploration of the neighborhood as “aliens.” With guidance, they will transform these into a printed postcard, contributing to and expanding the Alien Status Archive.
Sobre el Taller
La sesión comenzará con una introducción y pautas de Jeilin para enmarcar la experiencia fotográfica. Luego, los participantes recorrerán una ruta establecida titulada La Zona de Pérdida, atravesando puntos claves del barrio de Williamsburg. Este trayecto está diseñado para despertar la reflexión sobre la memoria, la ausencia y las huellas superpuestas de la migración en la ciudad.
De manera individual o en grupos, los participantes capturarán imágenes que resuenen con sus reflexiones y vivencias. Al regresar, cada uno seleccionará tres fotografías que expresen mejor su exploración del barrio como Aliens. Con acompañamiento, transformarán estas imágenes en una postal impresa—contribuyendo y ampliando el Archivo Alien Status.
