American Ali Affleck moved to the UK 10 years ago bringing her passion for 1920s and 30s American ‘pop’ and swing dance friendly music with her. On arrival in Edinburgh she found herself to be the only young performer of the early jazz and blues genre, and although it took a while to find musicians to support her dream, Ali was nominated as Best Emerging Artist in 2014, and won the highly coveted award of Best Vocalist that same year in the Scottish jazz awards. Since then Ali has been nominated as Best Vocalist in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, and she is regularly commissioned by the BBC, produces large scale events , programs tours for visiting artists, launched The Speakeasy and Big Easy sessions at Scotland’s iconic Jazz Bar and thus earned the title of “Scotland’s Queen of vintage jazz and blues” (OC Weekly). With countless sell out performances around the world and regularly working alongside some of the countries top musicians, Ali has firmly established herself as the quintessential ‘go to’ for truly authentic early jazz and blues vocals.
Ali is a historian, dancer, percussionist and a specialist in early vocal techniques. Always academically focused, she is currently developing a theory on vocal technique and the maturing voice, spurred on in part by her rather unusual family heritage in that Dame Nellie Melba is her great great Auntie.
Ali splits her time between the US and Europe, collaborating with fellow early jazz fanatics as she goes.
Tonight will see a joyful and wild performance with Ali’s trademark fun banter and a setlist crammed with both rare old roots blues and more familiar hot jazz and chanson – all pulled from her band’s massive repertoire. On stage with Ali will be Newcastle’s own Bradley Johnston on guitar along with Ali’s long time collaborators – star trumpeter Colin Steele and 1920s double bass expert Roy Percy.
“Bloody Marvellous” – Bill Bailey
“No other singer can deliver with such authenticity and as swingingly as Ali” – BBC Jazz Nights
