Alfreda’s Cinema returns to Anthology to host the FIRST in-person USA & NYC event with British and Jamaican filmmaker, writer, and artist Cecile Emeke, who is currently celebrating completing the first decade of her creative practice that began with her meteoric rise in 2014. A decade ago, Emeke broke the internet with ACKEE & SALTFISH and STROLLING, which led to her directing HBO’s INSECURE, IDRIS ELBA’s IN THE LONG RUN and the TATE MODERN commission THE ANCESTORS CAME on the life & work of the late FAITH RINGGOLD. Self-taught, Emeke’s ingenuity, boldness and refusal to bend to industry conventions ignited a fresh and rich approach to telling Black stories. 10 years later, Emeke is standing tall with a career that spans across mediums and genre, from broadcast television, independent film and artist’s moving image, to documentary, comedy to experimental cinema. This celebration of Cecile Emeke is an expression of gratitude for continuing to insist on dexterity and multiplicity in an industry that often imposes singularity and conformity, particularly on Black women.
