About Alex Russell

Alex Russell combines hand-made content with digital technology to make one-off prints and commissioned art. Alex develops algorithms that influence each other’s behaviour, governed by systems such as cellular automata to determine the characteristics of the content. The generative process works in two stages, using the biological concepts of genotypes and phenotypes to create a plan of the print and then build it. He works in series, each with its own themes, code and image library. Overarching everything is a conceptual approach to pattern, including design patterns (from software design) and pattern language (from architecture). Alex is intrigued by how traditions of arranging content can be expressed as a grammar, taking the rich history of print-making to a unique new place.

Captivated as a teenager by screen printing, Alex spent many years as a textile designer and lecturer. Fascinated by coding, he began to explore the possibilities of generative systems around 20 years ago, later researching how digital fabric printers could print ever-changing patterns. Since 2022, he has focussed on fine art print-making and commissions, enthralled by making original work in a space bounded by art and science, the hand-made and the digital.

About Liverpool Art Fair

Liverpool Art Fair is an annual event, aiming to showcase a wide range of affordable original art by a plethora of local artists; providing a unique insight into the region’s creative talent and the opportunity for everyone, from seasoned collector to first time art buyer, to own their own piece of the Liverpool art world.

Pre-pandemic the event ran for eight years, launching in May 2012 as part of the inaugural Liverpool Art Month, at the then brand new Camp and Furnace. In 2017, we relocated to the Pier Head, in a purpose-built gallery constructed from five shipping containers! In 2019 we took Liverpool Art Fair to Metquarter, where it ran for 80 consecutive days.

In 2023 we were delighted to partner with the Royal Liver Building for the long-awaited return of the event, and its unqualified success means we are back for 2024, celebrating our 10th anniversary! In total we have welcomed over 55,000 art lovers to our events and showcased work by almost 2000 artists. Come along and experience the work of some of the region’s most talented visual artists, and with prices starting at just £20 you won’t leave empty handed!
