About this Event

The Alex Anest Organ Trio will be joined by Ingrid Racine for a special night of music. Ingrid and Alex will play their original works as well as music from the New Standards book of women jazz composers The lineup also includes Jim Alfredson on organ and Annie Hayes on Drums. Alex and Ingrid have previously collaborated on projects focusing on women composers in Jazz. This time the focus is primarily on their own compositions.
Trumpeter Ingrid Racine transcends stylistic categories in pursuit of her own authentic sound as an improviser and composer. Steeped in the traditions of early jazz and Detroit hard bop, she also melds rock, hip hop and aesthetic influences from across the globe to arrive at her unique sound, which is both confident and versatile. In the words of jazz critic Michael G Nastos, "She is a little on the funk side of jazz, but can swing as hard as she needs to..."
Alex Anest is a lifelong guitarist and musician who is fascinated with the endless possibilities of improvisation. While he grew up in Ohio, he has been teaching, performing, and recording in the Southeast Michigan area since 1996. Over the years he has been a founding member of various jazz oriented groups including the Ann Arbor Guitar Trio, Nomad, Giraffe, and Never Nebula. Since 2018 he has played with Gayelynn McKinney in her McKinney Zone project, which won a Detroit Music Award for Outstanding Jazz Recording. Alex has studied with Miles Okazaki, Chris Buzzelli, Benny Green, Mark Kirschenmann, and Ellen Rowe. He has also appeared on over 30 albums, including most recently a pair of organ trio records – Anest, Kendrick, and McKinney Live at the Blue Llama Volumes 1 and 2. Both are available on Bandcamp.
Jim Alfredson comes from a musical family. His father earned a living as a professional musician for many years and encouraged Jim's talents from a very young age. Some of Jim's earliest memories include pulling on the drawbars of his father's Hammond B3 at the age of four. Jim began writing his own songs at the age of eight on a Yamaha organ. A score of synthesizers and multitrack machines followed until he came full circle at sixteen and began lusting after the sound of the Hammond organ once again. Jim has immersed himself in the study of the mighty Hammond B3 ever since, dedicated to uncovering new directions within the deep tradition of the instrument.
Annie Hayes is a drummer and educator based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She is well versed in a variety of musical styles and techniques, including hard bop, classical percussion, indie pop, big band, and musical theatre. Her style of playing behind the kit is greatly influenced by her musical inspirations such as Ben Riley, Elvin Jones, Steve Gadd, and Vinnie Colaiuta. Annie has had the privilege of studying under Michael Gould, Nate Winn, David Alvarez III, Dennis Wilson, Robert Hurst and Andy Milne. She is currently in her fourth year at The University of Michigan, earning a Bachelor's degree in Jazz & Contemplative Studies. Annie has a passion for education as well as performance, and has worked as a private instructor since 2016. In 2023 she completed a year-long mentorship program with the Detroit Civic Youth Ensembles, working under Vincent Chandler. She is inspired by her teachers, mentors, and the communities that surround her.
