About Twinn Ethyr's music...
Twinn Ethyr delivers an immersive and imaginative musical experience through Briar Prastiti's guitar and vocal compositions, enhanced by Moth Quartet's arrangements. Briar, under the alias Twinn Ethyr, explores folkloric, melancholic, and ethereal themes. Her deeply personal songs use narrative to navigate complex emotions, akin to folklore's storytelling and symbolism. Twinn Ethyr's emotive harmony and poetic imagery offer rich, interpretive freedom.
The journey behind the album...
Strange Clouds is Briar's debut album for her solo project 'Twinn Ethyr'. Briar began writing songs at the age of 18, sowing the seeds towards a gradual emerging into the world. Many of the songs on Strange Clouds were written over the course of the last 14 years as a therapy for herself. In 2017 John Psathas, a long time friend and mentor of Briar initiated the process of recording Strange Clouds at the university. The recordings however, remained untouched for years afterwards as Briar went travelling, eventually settling in Greece, the place where she met a second pivotal friend in the process, James Wylie. James, Wellington born and now living in Greece insisted that they collaborate, adding accompaniment of saxophone and Iranian instruments such as kamancheh and setar. They had discovered something magical, and lined up gigs to perform the songs together. Upon returning to New Zealand, Briar finally revisited the recordings and integrated James's contributions. After receiving the Douglas Lilburn Composer residency in 2023, Briar then established a collaboration between Twinn Ethyr and Wellington based improvisational string quartet, 'Moth Quartet', which is now her accompaniment for Twinn Ethyr performances in New Zealand. Their performances have been so successful that Nicholas Denton-Protsack (Canadian cellist and composer) instigated having Twinn Ethyr perform in his festival 'Classical Valley' in Kelowna, Canada, 2024. Strange Clouds is to be released under Nick's own independent music label 'Whatnot Records'.
Finally, a little about Moth Quartet...
Moth Quartet, comprising four composers, Tristan Carter (violin), Salina Fisher (violin), Elliot Vaughan (viola), and Nicholas Denton Protsack (cello), stands out for its blend of composition and improvisation. Their unique approach combines fixed and improvised arrangements, creating a dynamic, dreamy soundscape that enriches Twinn Ethyr's performances.
