Alban Arthan is the Welsh Pagan/Druid name for the Winter Solstice, when the day is shortest and the night longest.
At Red Oak Grove, we gather to at sunset to light eight candles which will bear the warmth of the sun throughout the longest night — for the rest of our nightlong Vigil, we turn off all the lights and electronics in order to truly feel how long and dark the night can be as we blow out one each hour until midnight, when we’ll be shrouded in darkness. Finally, we begin re-lighting one candle each hour until dawn arrives, and we toast to celebrate the return of the sun!
(And although the Vigil lasts all night, we don't expect any one person to be awake that whole time — by the wee hours of the morning, usually only one or two of us remain up! Everyone's welcome to join for as long or as little as they're comfortable with.)
This full-weekend event also features multiple contests, crafts, and workshops, as well as a gift swap game and the post-quarantine return of our annual Crazy Pagan Auction!
