About this Event
Journey from Southend to South Sudan in new exhibition 'Alan Sorrell: Nubia', after hours at the Beecroft Art Gallery.
An artist local to Southend, Alan Sorrell gained international recognition in the mid 20th century for his work documenting, reconstructing and reimagining historic sites. With a keen personal as well as artistic connection to archaeology, the national, post-war surge of interest in the preservation of heritage saw Sorrell’s career take off, leading him around the world and back again to Southend on Sea.
From our own collections, Southend Museums is pleased to present ‘Alan Sorrell: Nubia’, an exhibition showcasing the pieces Sorrell created in 1962 to document the areas flooded for the creation of the Aswan High Dam in Egypt and Sudan, immortalising the region’s lost landscape in his artwork.
Explore Sorrell's work after hours at the gallery with a complementary glass of wine, before learning more about his astronishing career in a talk by Art Curator Kevin Marsh.
Doors open at 6pm, with an hour for exploring the gallery. The talk begins at 6:30pm, and the event finishes by 8pm.
Prebooking is essential. This event is 18+ only. FAQs below.
