A DRAMA OF LOVE VERSUS MOB VIOLENCE FROM 1936Fritz Lang arrived in Hollywood with a bang with FURY - a seething indictment of lynch mob culture wrapped up in a deliciously bitter, slow-burn revenge story. Spencer Tracy - in his first major starring role - plays an innocent man, mistakenly accused of kidnapping by the bloodthirsty rabble in a small town. After a conspiring mob of citizens attempts to burn him alive inside the local jail, Tracy concocts a deliciously ironic plan for payback, leading to a dramatic examination of the nature of justice.
FURY represents the work of several talented individuals at the height of their powers. Lang and co-writer Bartlett Cormack pulled the story from a report of an actual lynching, providing an uncomfortably realistic look at the poisonous logic of mob mentality. Additionally, Lang dove deep into his background as a German citizen who fled the rising mob of Nazism, creating an atmosphere of ugliness and paranoia accented with the expressionist flourishes that define his early body of work. As the wrongly accused man, Spencer Tracy delivers one of his career best performances, moving from a charming, ordinary guy to a rage-filled tyrant, warped with thoughts of destroying the lives of the people who sought to destroy him.
Without mincing words, FURY is a total barn-burner of a film, and absolutely unmissable for any fan of classic Hollywood cinema, boiling melodrama, and sweet, sweet revenge.
Tickets to this one-night only screening of FURY are $7.
