On our state’s 205th birthday, join us in the Hands-On Gallery of Museum of Alabama for a family-friendly celebration of 36 years of Grandma’s Attic and exciting plans for a new Children’s Gallery. Since the 1980s, Grandma’s Attic has welcomed thousands of young visitors to the Alabama Department of Archives & History. Generations of children have pretended to be Alabamians of the past there by trying on historic clothes, cooking over a vintage stove, attending or teaching school, typing on an electric typewriter, and talking in historic Montgomery telephone booths. At the end of this year, the Hands-On Gallery and Grandma’s Attic will close to make way for a brand new Children’s Gallery, which will open in the space in 2026.
The new gallery will expand the ideas and activities popular in Grandma’s Attic throughout the entire gallery space. New learning stations will include a cave, a house, a school, and even a rocket!
Come visit to help us celebrate these plans with crafts, snacks, and new friends to meet, and help us bid a very fond farewell to Grandma’s Attic.
