Akwasidae Festival 2023

As part of Southwark's 2023 summer celebrations, Southwark Black Parents Forum is delighted to bring the Akwasidae Festival to Camberwell Green. The Akwasidae Festival celebrates the culture, royal heritage and chiefs of the Ashanti. `The celebration is recognised by all people among the Ashanti diaspora and exists to give reverence to ancestors of great merit. From the Azonto to Stormzy, to the Historic 'Year of Return', Ghana and Ghanaians have been at the forefront of popular culture and this festival is another addition to the cultural connection between the UK and Ghana.

Director Tyreece Asamoah mentioned: "Southwark has the highest West African population in London, and whilst North London has Ghana Party in The Park, no landmark celebration like that exists in the South. This, to us, was a travesty."

Ernest Nsiah Youngmann, author of 'Mysteries of the Golden Stool', says:

"The attendance of HRM Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, to the Coronation of HRM King Charles III authenticates the long history between the two Kingdoms - the wars fought, Ghana's struggle for Independence, and the current economic, socio-cultural relationship between the two Kingdoms. The SBPF Akwasidae Festival is a celebration that enriches Southwark's residents with the plump vibrancy and buoyancy of Ghanaian diaspora communities. This event will be remembered by generations to come."

Featuring UK Ahenfo (a collection of Ghanian Kings and Queens based in the UK), as well as an exciting Troupe of Dancers, Acrobats and Performers; Stalls and Childrens Activities; the festival promises Culture, Joy and Splendour!
