Ajahn Vajiro (Phil Gunton), an English disciple of Ajahn Chah, has been a monk for more than 40 years. He was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 1953. His formative years were spent in Malaysia although he did return to England (University of Bath) for his higher education where he graduated in 1974 in Economics. He took up a career in accountancy. While in England, a friend encouraged him to go on a 10-day meditation retreat at the Oakenholt Buddhist Centre near Oxford. He met Ajahn Chah and Ajahn Sumedho in 1977 when they visited the Hampstead Vihara. In 1980, he was fully ordained as a monk.

In 1994, he moved to New Zealand to lead the Bodhinyanarama community in Stokes Valley, Wellington, for five years. Following this he entered a three-year retreat in Australia before returning to Amaravati in 2001. In 2012 he moved to Portugal where he had been closely involved in the establishment of Sumedharama Buddhist Monastery near Lisbon, which is where he is now based.
