AIWC members and their guests are invited to join the AIWC NAPLES HISTORICAL WALK AT MERGELLINA on SATURDAY 27 SEPTEMBER 2025. Starting our tour at the elegant Mergellina rail station in Piazza Piedigrotta, we will learn some history of the coastal zone known as Mergellina (including Piedigrotta at the foot of the Roman tunnel-road through the Posillipo hill) to better understand how this area developed and changed over the centuries.
We will visit the CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA DEL PARTO founded by Jacopo Sannazaro in the late 15th century; in the church we will admire the poet’s monumental tomb and hear the story behind the painting popularly known as “The Devil of Mergellina”.
We will visit the wonderful PARCO VERGILIANO A PIEDIGROTTA where we will see not only the tomb of the famous Latin poet Virgil, a place of veneration and pilgrimage for centuries after his death, but also the tomb of the Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi. Near Virgil’s tomb we will see the entrance to the famous Crypta Neapolitana, the Roman tunnel-road excavated through the Posillipo hill in the first century BC, as well as a segment of the Serino Acqueduct, one of the largest and most complex acqueduct systems in the Roman world.
NOTE: The visit to Virgil’s mausoleum requires walking up a rather steep and narrow flight of steps, but it is well worth it!
