Ainsley Hamill with Sam Kelly & Toby Shaer
On the birthday of poet and lyricist Robert Burns, join us to celebrate our friendship and close connections with Scottish music and culture.
Ainsley Hamill is one of Scotland’s most compelling singers, known for her remarkable voice and emotive style. Singing in English, Scots and Gaelic, she weaves together Scottish folklore with contemporary songwriting, creating music that is both timeless and fresh.
Described by The Guardian as “a stunning, powerful voice…thick with velvet and mirk…hovering between The Breath and early Adele”, Ainsley has been nominated as Gaelic Singer of the Year at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards and named as The Guardian’s Album of the Month.
She will be joined by a stellar line up, well known to Folk in the Barn audiences, BBC Folk Award winners Sam Kelly (vocals, guitar) and Toby Shaer (flute, guitar). Together they create a rich, dynamic live sound that has captivated audiences at Celtic Connections, Glastonbury, Tønder Festival and beyond.
“One of the best of her generation.” RnR Magazine
Earlier this year Ainsley released her third album Fable, a sublime and memorable collection of songs inspired by Scottish folklore, myth and landscape combining Gaelic, Scots and original compositions. The evening will feature material from Fable interspersed with a song or two from The Bard.
“Her voice is rich and warm, soaking it’s comforting balm deep… all the Hamill Hallmarks of a soulful, acute vocal dexterity With real feel for a lyric. Ainsley’s voice is muscular and undeniably flexible. It can be sultry or exuberant, but always percussive. It wraps you in its arms like a coat from the cold. This release (Belle of the Ball) is like a shining pool of water; vivid, clear and nothing short of brilliant.” Clive Pownceby Folk North-West
