Abstract: Prior to becoming a building enclosure consultant, the author spent 17 years working as an architectural sheet metal contractor/worker in Louisville, Kentucky. During this time, significant detailed information was derived from other industry professionals, time at the bench, as well as significant field experience with snips and soldering irons in hand. This experience coupled with the last 17 years as a building enclosure consultant have given the author unique and well-rounded architectural sheet metal experience. While many in the industry proclaim elevated levels of sheet metal expertise, it is apparent during design peer review of sheet metal assemblies and numerous sheet metal installations the skills needed for proper sheet metal design and installation are lacking. The purpose of this presentation is to share the author’s experience and pass on both time-tested design nuances and installation techniques that will enlighten the intermediate and advanced consultant.

Learning Objectives: The four learning objectives for this presentation are: 1.) understand flashing engagement, dimensions, and joinery, 2.) summarize underutilized fabrication techniques needed to accomplish modern problems, 3.) learn to select and properly utilize various metals based on building typology and expected service life, and 4.) examine details utilizing proper metal profiles and assemblies.

Speaker Bio: Russell Raymond has over 30 years experience in the sheet metal and roofing contracting and building envelope consulting industries. He started his career in an architectural sheet metal contracting company in Louisville, Kentucky and is a third-generation sheet metal tradesman. Mr. Raymond has also performed numerous investigations pertaining to sheet metal, roofing and waterproofing, as well as cladding and glazing-related failures.

He is a Registered Building Envelope Consultant, Registered Roof Observer, Certified EIFS Inspector, a Certified Tile Roofing Installer, Certified Level 1 Infrared Thermographer, and a Construction Documents Technologist.
