AI for Creatives Seminar

Explore AI as an artist in a hands-on seminar led by Dr Maggie Buxton and Kim Newall of AwhiWorld.
This two-hour interactive seminar introduces AI from a critical, creative, and practice-based perspective. Rather than positioning AI as a replacement for existing artistic methods, the session explores how this emerging “strange intelligence” is reshaping creative labour, authorship, and material practice.
The seminar features live demonstrations, facilitates discussion, and guides reflective exercises. You will learn how AI supports concept development, enables visual experimentation, and assists with writing (including promotion, documentation, and funding applications). The session also raises key concerns around data provenance, cultural appropriation, copyright, and environmental impact.
No preparation or prior experience is needed. The session is suitable for beginners, as well as for practitioners who are curious, uncertain, or critically engaged with the place of AI in contemporary creative practice.
Participants will ground their understanding with examples and find practical starting points. They will also develop a more nuanced understanding of where AI can fit, if at all, within their creative directions, values, and methodologies.
Dr Maggie Buxton and Kim Newall lead AwhiWorld, a creative research and innovation studio working at the intersection of art, emerging technologies, and community practice. This seminar forms part of their Strange Intelligences research project, which examines the evolving interface between emerging forms of intelligence and creative practice. Through workshops, exhibitions, and community-based learning, the project investigates critical awareness, experimental approaches, and the changing conditions of contemporary creative practice.
