Title: Let’s Listen! Course designed to review research related to Listening and Spoken Language outcomes and implications for Auditory Verbal Therapy in early intervention, strategies, techniques, parent coaching and the importance of inter-professional collaboration in service delivery.

Title: Mission: Probable: Age-Appropriate Listening and Spoken Language Abilities for Children with Hearing Loss
Before the widespread adoption of the newborn hearing screening, advancements in hearing technology, and the proliferation of Listening and Spoken (LSL), opportunities to help children born with hearing loss were limited. This presentation analyzes the results of recent research related to Listening and Spoken Language outcomes and puts them in context for professionals and parents. Today, excellent listening and spoken language outcomes are not only possible, but probable for children born with hearing loss.At the end of the session participants will be able to:

1. Name 4 longitudinal studies that describe the factors that influence the development of listening and spoken language in children who have hearing loss up to age 5 years.

2. List factors that contribute to better listening and language outcomes at 3 and 5 years of age.

Presentation: Tamala S. Bradham, Ph.D., DHA, CCC-A, CPHQ, CPPS. and K. Todd Houston, PhD, CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT

Title: The North Star of Your Practice: The Family
(190 minutes: 90 morning and 100 afternoon)
The reason why we went into our respective fields was to develop listening and spoken communication skills in children with hearing loss. When we started our careers, our compasses were taking us many directions. It was adventurous, and we learned so much! However, what we eventually discovered was that we needed to find our North Stars. This interactive session will provide highlights of our professional journeys to find our respective North Stars. Through Dr. Bradham’s personal experiences of growing up with hearing loss, raising three children (two with special needs), and practicing in the health care field for over 20 years working with families and children with diverse needs, she will share what she’s discovered along the way. Similarly, Dr. Houston will share his perspectives of being a father of a premature infant, discovering personal strength while facing a health crisis, and being a speech-language pathologist and Listening & Spoken Language Specialist, Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist (LSLS Cert. AVT) for more than 25 years. We believe, today more than ever, that the family is really the North Star that our internal compasses must follow to achieve the best outcomes desired. At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Identify professional practice patterns that engage families in their child's intervention and habilitation.

2. Construct your personal message that will tell families that you hear them.

3. List specific strategies that parents and professionals can utilize to ensure optimal listening and spoken language outcomes.

Closing Keynote: Beth Walker Wooten, M.Ed., CED., LSLS Cert AVT.

Title: Mission Accepted: Integrating Research with Practice
(60 minutes)
Given estimates that suggest that 97% of families of children with hearing loss communicate in the home through Listening and Spoken Language (LSL), it is reasonable to assume that most families will desire for their children to reach their full potential in their ability to communicate through LSL. Healthcare providers are obligated to ensure that families are equipped. Research indicates that there are essential steps families and healthcare providers should take to optimize outcomes. At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Discuss the implications of the longitudinal studies’ findings on early intervention service delivery and implementation of the 1-3-6 guidelines promoted by the Department of Health and Human Services Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Early Hearing Detection and Intervention programs.

2. List 3 types of information healthcare providers should share with families so they can help their children develop age-appropriate listening and spoken language.

3. Identify resources and services Hearing First offers to support families and healthcare providers.

Q&A: Tamala S. Bradham, Ph.D., DHA, CCC-A, CPHQ, CPPS, K. Todd Houston, PhD, CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT and Beth Walker Wooten, M.Ed., CED., LSLS Cert AVT.
