Learn how to carve out the incredible architecture of the Brooklyn Brownstone with Gavin Snider.
About this Event

The morming session sold out and Gavin has generously offered to do a second afternoon session from 2pm-5pm.

Gavin Snider is an artist who lives and works in New York. He spends his days painting the city and the people in it.

In this workshop, Gavin will focus on the architecture of Brooklyn, specifically the brownstone. He'll show you how he builds up a watercolor from the blank page, "carving out" the painting with increasing levels of detail. He'll talk about composing with negative space, applying light and shadow, and approaching both architectural and landscape elements in a painting.

We will meet on the corner of 5th Street and Prospect Park West. There's lots of space and people to paint and you can also turn around and paint the Litchfield Mansion as an alternative to the brownstones. Restrooms are located in the park at the Picnic House and the Bandshell. See map below.

Workshop is scheduled for April 27. We have a rain date of April 28. As the day approaches we will assess the weather and communicate via the email address you used to enroll.

To see more about Gavin visit his website.

Workshop Schedule

  • 30-40 minutes: Gavin shares his approach to watercolor, painting the buildings of Prospect Park West.
  • 1-2 hours: Group breaks off to paint around Prospect Park West and 5th Street. During this time, Gavin will walk around and give one on one guidance to each sketcher (or leave them alone if they prefer).
  • 30 minutes: Group reconvenes to share their work and discuss challenges, approach, and discoveries from the painting session.

Suggested Supply List (no need to have everything here, it's just Gavin's perfect wish list)

2 round watercolor brushes, one larger, one smaller. A fine tip is more important than size. He uses size 10-12 for washes and size 3-6 for detail.

Arches watercolor block, 140 lb Cold press, 11x14 in size, or fairly similar large, thick paper with a bit of texture. The block is nice because it doesn't need to be taped down.

2 water cups and a sketch board with holes to hold them.

Travel stool

Watercolor tubes. Again, the color matters less than the technique. Some options are listed below.

Daniel Smith Moonglow

Daniel Smith Indigo

Daniel Smith Green Gold

Winsor & Newton Yellow Ochre

Winsor & Newton Winsor Green

Winsor & Newton Burnt Sienna

Winsor & Newton Prussian Blue
