Afternoon Ecology: Shark EncountersAfternoon Ecology offers an enriching program for K-5th graders, ideal for both afterschool and homeschool education. Designed to nurture curiosity, students explore the diverse marine habitats of the San Francisco Bay Area while working together with their peers. This week's theme, Shark Encounters, immerses students in the thrilling world of sharks as they explore both bay and ocean species. Participants will observe these fascinating cartilaginous fish up close, learning about their unique adaptations and how they differ from bony fish. The experience includes the exciting opportunity to touch a live shark and help feed baby leopard sharks. Students will also examine shark artifacts and compare the life strategies of bay and ocean sharks through engaging group activities.
New themes are introduced weekly, allowing students to build on their growing knowledge of marine ecosystems. By attending regularly, participants develop a deeper understanding of marine life and the connections between habitats, fostering teamwork, scientific exploration, and environmental stewardship.
