Our annual tradition of rounding up talented musicians to reimagine a classic album continues! This edition of the popular two-night event features a Steve Dawson-led ensemble conjuring the peerless Neil Young as he both rocked out and strummed gorgeous country-folk songs on a classic album that has appeared on many greatest albums of all time lists. Released in 1970, After The Gold Rush was recorded with members of both of his associated groups at the time, Crazy Horse and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. In many ways, After The Gold Rush set the template for Neil Young’s career, allowing him to shift back and forth between soft and hard, folk and rock, one foot firmly in the coffee shop scene of the '60s, the other in the rock arenas of the '70s.
Since Dawson considers these performances “reimaginings” rather than “tributes,” expect to hear such timeless songs as “Southern Man,” “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” and the brilliant title track performed in styles entirely up to the artists’ inspiration. Following a first set of After the Gold Rush performed in its entirety, the second set will feature the guest artists’ choice of songs from Young’s extensive catalogue.
Tickets: Adult $69; Senior $65; Student $29 available at Kay Meek Arts Centre.
