What memory would you choose to live in… forever? That’s the haunting question at the heart of After Life a spellbinding stage play from Jack Thorne.
First performed at London’s National Theatre in 2021 this quietly powerful drama is now being brought to local audiences by Leighton Buzzard Drama Group.
Inspired by Hirokazu Kore-eda’s award-winning 1998 Japanese film of the same name After Life imagines a world just beyond our own — a waiting-room-style limbo where the recently deceased are asked to choose one single memory to carry with them into eternity. Once chosen that memory will be carefully re-created… and everything else will fade away.
Funny moving and unexpectedly uplifting the play takes us through a week in this unusual “processing centre” as a cast of strangers reflect on their lives wrestle with regrets and discover what truly matters.
This is not a ghost story nor a conventional after-death drama. It’s something quieter gentler — and more universal.
It’s about the seemingly small moments that define us: a conversation with a parent a first kiss the view from a childhood window. It’s about memory identity and the joy (and pain) of looking back.
Whether you’re in your teens or your eighties you’ll find yourself asking the same question: What moment would I choose?
With its imaginative setting ensemble cast of vivid characters and a perfect balance of humour and heartbreak After Life offers a deeply theatrical evening that lingers long after the curtain falls.
