Technological advances are revolutionizing the field of marine science, as well as efforts to conserve and protect aquatic species. Environmental DNA (or e-DNA) is genetic material left behind by organisms in their environment (from the shedding of cells, mucus, feces, skin, scales, or hair), and can be used to detect invasive and/or endangered species, monitor biodiversity, and assess the health of ecosystems.
Dr. Angelina Dichiera, Assistant Professor at William & Mary’s Batten School & VIMS, will explain how eDNA can be used to detect and monitor the presence of endangered sturgeon in Bay tributaries, and help guide the recovery and conservation of these incredible β€œliving fossils.”
