Digital Diaspora presents Afrorack live at Kafé Hærverk: Wednesday 30th of April 2025. Brian Bamanya is the first person to build DIY modular synth setups in Africa, hence his alias Afrorack. The 30-year-old engineering wizard started his music journey playing guitar and creating his own instruments, until he dove into the world of modular synths.
Based on his own experimentations and online findings, Brian developed an extensive home-built modular synth set-up on which he’s been performing for the last two years during dazzling improvised live-sets mixing African rhythms, techno and acid house.
He performed for the first time in Europe at CTM in 2020 and took part in their Hacklab laboratory, right before the pandemic, since then Afrorack is regularly travelling to showcase his music, give workshops and talks.
His debut album was released by Hakuna Kulala in 2022 and was critically acclaimed and covered by publications such as Pitchfork, The Wire and Resident Advisor.
Highlight shows include Nyege Nyege, Kilele Summit, CTM Festival, Rewire Festival, SInsal Festival, Bad Bonn Kilbi…
