Deepen your hand percussion skills in the second workshop of our Afro-Cuban series. This two-hour, hands-on session focuses on technique and tone across conga, bongo, cowbell and clave — with optional güiro and maracas. You’ll rotate through the main instruments and explore how parts interlock within an ensemble. Instruments are provided; bring your own if you’d like to specialise.What you’ll work on:
• Technique for producing open tones, slaps and muted strokes on congas and bongos
• Locking patterns and clave relationships for ensemble feel, plus simple variations to expand the groove
• Cowbell and clave coordination for danceable grooves
• Choosing and shaping tones on güiro and maracas (optional)
Instructor: Wilson Melo Garcia (Colombian percussionist), supported by Son Geelong members Dale Atwell and Sonoka Miyake.
Skill level: Perfect for absolute beginners and experienced players — everyone learns together.
