What are the Yoruba dances?
These are the practices that came to Cuba (amongst other countries) during the transatlantic slave trade. The enslaved people, most of whom were Yoruba believed in deities known as the Orishas, This pantheon of deities forms part of the religion known as la Regla de Ocha (also known as Santeria or Lucumi) in Cuba. Widely practised in Cuba, it is more than just a dance, it is an important part of Afro-Cuban culture, and features heavily in Cuba's popular music style, timba.
The orishas are deities with human-like qualities, each with their own character and specific traits. In this workshop we will be studying Ellegua the child-like orisha and Yemaya, a female orisha that represents the sea and motherhood.
What is Rumba?
Rumba is a dance that was created in Cuba by the Black Africans brought to the island during the transatlantic slave trade (though several countries have their own versions of Rumba, Cuban Rumba is in fact unique and not to be confused with other styles!).
Cuban rumba comprises of three main forms the most popular of which is Guaguanco. This style of Rumba incorporates a playful game between the male and female dancers culminating in the infamous vacunao (vaccination).

About your teacher:
Nadia is an energetic dancer, passionate about Cuban dance, and in particular the Afro-Cuban dance styles. Her journey began as a student in Glasgow, though it was a move to Manchester and then on to Paris where she discovered more about the richness of Cuban dance which instilled a deep passion for Cuban folkloric dance.
She has since gained experience in various genres of Cuban dance but is perhaps best known for Rumba and Afro-Cuban dances in which she has both taught and performed at home and abroad, and led online projects such as the 'Rumba on Lockdown' choreography group designed to incorporate musicality with Rumba in popular Cuban songs.
Her teaching style is lively and dynamic, catering for the complete novice to the more experienced dancer, with a focus on body movement, musicality and styling.
