Whether you are a complete beginner or have some experience, this course offers a friendly and supportive environment to develop your skills. Immerse yourself in the infectious rhythms and enjoy the energy of group drumming. Throughout the 5 weeks we'll be exploring a couple of instruments:
Atabaque - A traditional hand drum made with a natural head. We will be utilising congas for the same effect whilst being able to cater to more people. This drum can be seen in some Candomblé terreiros, in capoeira rodas and many other cultural manifestations.
Timbal - The ever popular hand drum from Bahia thats taken Brazil by storm, especially since the 80s when it rose to popularity. It's an evolution of the Atabaque with a nylon head, can be worn on a strap and paraded with. Featured in styles from Afoxé, Bloco Afro, Samba Duro, Samba Enredo, Maracatu and many many others
Auxiliary percussion - To accompany these drums we'll learn a little about bells and shakers that are amazing instruments in their own right.
The Voice - The rhythms don't exist on their own, and are there often to support a song of some description.
During this course we'll spend a short time on songs that we can put together with the rhythms we'll be learning. Whilst visiting cultures from the extensive afro-diaspora (including Candomblé, Macumba, Bloco-Afro) that exists in Brazil, and how these cultures have fused with Indigenous and European cultures.Booking is essential to attend so the right proportion of instruments can be provided.
