From the desk of the BDA Lagos;
Our forebears and progenitors came back to Lagos having had their emancipation in 1830-35 in Brazil. They came back with cultural heritage, monuments and social sensibilities. In order to restore, revive and conserve this cultural heritage, we deem it necessary to promote our culture by showcasing these every year.
This is to intimate you of the forthcoming 2023 Afro-Brazilian heritage Festival coming up on the 2nd to 5th November, 2023 to be precise. This is a 4-day program. The heritage Festival which had its first edition in 2018 and subsequently in 2022 is an annual event.
This have been recognized by the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture and added to the Annual National Festival Calendar.
The primary aim is to restore, revive and conserve our Afro Brazilian heritage in Nigeria. This year festival will also comprise the unfolding of the “AFRO-BRAZILIAN HERITAGE TREASURES IN NIGERIA PROJECT“.
The family participation and support towards our cultural heritage cannot be overemphasized and indeed, this will further give each one of us the opportunity to observe and experience the ambiance and dexterity of Brazilians flamboyant culture in the Popo Aguda community of Lagos.
The 4-day program are as follows:
Thursday, 2nd November, 2023
**MEMORIAL LECTURE**
The President, Mr Olayemi Marinho and the Vice President, Mr. Kola Adeseye deemed it necessary to collaborate in hosting this year Annual Memorial lecture, ie (Mario Amaro Marinho/Antonio Joaquim Marinho and Dalmas, Damazio, Pacheco). This will give us the opportunity to showcase and profess the potential heritage/historical backgrounds of our respective families. Thereafter, there will be laying of wreath at the Old Ajele cemetery in honor of our departed descendants.

**JUMAT PRAYERS**
Afro Brazilian Food Exhibition and attendance of Jumat Service and prayers at the Brazilian Salvador Mosque.
Saturday, 4th November,2023
**Afro Brazilian Cultural and Traditional display**
at the Shoremekun hall.
Sunday, 5th November, 2023
**Thanksgiving and prayers**
at the Holy Cross Cathedral Church, Lagos.
In this years festival, we shall be introducing to the descendants and the public, "THE AFRO-BRAZILIAN TREASURES IN NIGERIA PROJECT created and designed by REDAC TOURS. This project is a 4-point community developmental agenda.
1. The first historical visit to Brazil after our ancestors returned back to Lagos Nigeria in the 19th century.
We shall display on the Brazilian soil our Brazilian Bumba Meu Boi, the 3 Afro-Brazilian Egungun Arebe, Labo & Sembe, the Carretta Carnival, Osun Ijikenji, Gelede and others.
2. This visit is for the Afro-Brazilian Community in Nigeria to meet President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and discuss tourism business expansion from Nigeria to Brazil, cultural entertainment promotion and the creation of the Afro-Brazilian Heritage Museum in Nigeria.
3. It is to ensure that Rio de Janeiro is named the twin city of the Brazilian Quarters Popo Aguda Community in Lagos Island, Lagos State Nigeria. It is a must that we achieve this.
4. It is to add the Brazilian Quarters Popo Aguda group to the Rio de Janeiro carnival structure and participate on an annual basis. This will bring us to the limelight and pave the way for the Afro-Brazilian descendants in Nigeria to connect with Brazil culturally and entertainment wise.
Your committed participation at this year festival will further project our cultural heritage and showcase the beauty of our Brazilian culture to the community, Lagos and Nigeria in general.

Furthermore, this is to notify all respective sub-committees taking part at the 2023 Afro Brazilian heritage Festival are mandated to attend a meeting with the President and Exco (BDA) after the monthly general meeting on Sunday, 6/8/2023.
