About this Event

In honor of the African Heritage Month this September, AfriThrive is thrilled to announce its first-ever Taste of Africa, a vibrant culinary and cultural fundraiser, taking place on Saturday, September 27, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown.

This first-of-its-kind food experience invites guests on a flavorful journey across the African continent through traditional dishes, healing ingredients, live performances, and immersive storytelling. All proceeds will support AfriThrive’s Food as Medicine initiative, which provides culturally appropriate food access and nutrition education to low-income families in Montgomery County and beyond.

Across the world, the healthiest communities are those who stay connected to their traditional foods – meals made from the earth, shared with others, and rooted in meaning. The Taste of Africa invites us into that same wisdom. With every dish, we honor generations who understood that food is medicine, culture, and connection. This experience celebrates the richness of African foods where healing doesn’t come from trends, but from time-tested ingredients, shared stories, and the joy of eating well.

Taste of Africa is more than an event—it’s the beginning of a cultural food movement,” said Dr. Truphena Choti, Founder and CEO of AfriThrive. It’s a space where food becomes a bridge to healing, heritage, and hope. Through every flavor and every story, we are building support for food justice, health equity, and community resilience.

Attendees will enjoy:

  • Tasting Stations featuring local African chefs and restaurants
  • A curated AfriThrive Marketplace of African-inspired wellness goods
  • Cultural Performances and Storytelling
  • An exclusive VIP reception and networking cocktail

A Fundraiser for Food as Medicine

All proceeds from the event will directly benefit AfriThrive’s Food as Medicine initiative, which provides low-income families with culturally relevant food, nutrition education, and farm-based wellness programs that prioritize health, dignity, and cultural connection.

Sponsorship & Vendor Opportunities

AfriThrive invites sponsors, chefs, wellness vendors, and cultural entrepreneurs to partner with us for the inaugural Taste of Africa and help establish an annual tradition that uplifts heritage, health, and community.

Whether you’re looking to amplify your brand, share your culinary expertise, or showcase African-inspired goods, this is your opportunity to be part of a powerful cultural movement rooted in food justice and wellness.

We are currently seeking:

  • Sponsors starting at $1,000 – with benefits including brand visibility, event recognition, and alignment with a purpose-driven platform for food and health equity
  • Chefs and Restaurants specializing in traditional African cuisine who are passionate about food as healing and cultural expression
  • Vendors offering African-inspired or wellness-focused products that nourish, connect, and educate
