African Textiles: Traditions and Innovations

Richards will discuss the historical origins and production of various African textiles, while exploring how specific textiles have changed over time and influenced contemporary fashion on the African continent.

BIO:

Dr. Christopher L. Richards is an associate professor of African art history at Brooklyn College. He specializes in African fashion, dress, and personal adornment. Richards has published extensively on dress and fashion in Ghana and South Africa, including his most-recently published book, Cosmopolitanism and Women’s Fashion in Ghana (2022).

Textile Arts Center's Artist in Residence (TAC AIR) combines studio access with a rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum and regular critical dialogue, providing residents an opportunity to learn and explore the textile medium, and an alternative to traditional higher education programs. TAC is defined by its buzzing community atmosphere and inter-generational collaborative environment. AIR studios are fully integrated with rented studio space, adult classes, youth programs, and various events throughout the year. The residency culminates in a group exhibition produced and hosted by TAC.
