Malawi is a small landlocked country located in central Africa with 30 percent of the area being Lake Malawi, the third largest lake in Africa. At the southern end of the reservoir is Lake Malawi National Park, the world's first protected freshwater basin. Lying within the Western Rift Valley, Lake Malawi is one of the deepest lakes in the world. Its surroundings are of exceptional natural beauty with its islands and clear waters set against the background of the Great African Rift Valley escarpment.
UNESCO World Heritage badge was awarded to freshwaters specifically for being a Darwinian home to many hundreds of cichlid fish, nearly all of which are endemic. Locally known as "mbuna", fish display a significant example of biological evolution. Due to the isolation of Lake Malawi from other water bodies, its fish have developed impressive adaptive radiation and speciation, and are an outstanding example of the ecological processes.
Lake Malawi owes the cleanliness of the its waters to the lack of industries and isolation from other water bodies. Moreover, it is probably the country with the fewest cars in the world - on the only road, along the gigantic lake which covers a third of the country's area, you may not see a car for an hour.
On this off beaten track journey, we will stay in comfy lakeside eco lodges, kick off our shoes, enjoy some delicious food, and get mesmerized by stunning sunsets, while discovering a gorgeous but little known African best kept secrets!!
