My Father’s Shadow is the poignant and visually striking feature film debut by Akinola Davies Jr., set against the turbulent backdrop of Nigeria’s 1993 presidential election. The film follows two young brothers who, during an unexpected reunion with their estranged father, embark on a journey from the countryside to Lagos. What begins as a hopeful day of reconnection gradually unfolds into a deeply emotional portrait of fatherhood, memory, and fragility. My Father’s Shadow is het ontroerende en visueel indrukwekkende speelfilmdebuut van Akinola Davies Jr., gesitueerd tegen de turbulente achtergrond van de Nigeriaanse presidentsverkiezingen van 1993. De film volgt twee jonge broers die, tijdens een onverwachte hereniging met hun vervreemde vader, een reis maken van het platteland naar Lagos. Wat begint als een hoopvolle dag van herverbinding ontvouwt zich geleidelijk tot een diep emotioneel portret van vaderschap, herinnering en kwetsbaarheid.
Terwijl ze zich bewegen door de levendige maar politiek gespannen stad, beleven de jongens momenten van vreugde en ontdekking, naast de stille spanningen rond het leven van hun vader - zijn worstelingen, geheimen en verslechterende gezondheid. Tegen de dreigende aanwezigheid van militair geweld en een land op de rand van onrust, wordt hun korte tijd samen zowel teder als aangrijpend. Met een intieme vertelstijl en rijke sfeer vangt de film de poging van een familie om opnieuw verbinding te maken, in de schaduw van persoonlijke en politieke onzekerheid, en reflecteert hij op verlies, nalatenschap en de complexiteit van liefde.
De film ging in première op het filmfestival van Cannes in 2025, in de prestigieuze Un Certain Regard-sectie; een historische eerste selectie voor een Nigeriaanse film in de officiële competitie. My Father’s Shadow ontving een Special Mention voor de Caméra d’Or en werd geprezen om zijn poëtische vertelstijl en emotionele diepgang. Vervolgens oogstte de film wereldwijd erkenning op het festivalcircuit, met onder meer een BAFTA Award voor Outstanding Debut, een British Independent Film Award en twee Gotham Independent Film Awards.
