De avond wordt gehost door Ama van Dantzig, bestuurslid bij Africadelic en medeoprichter van Dr. Monk, een sociale onderneming met vestigingen in zowel Amsterdam als Accra, en ingeleid door Nancy Asaah, medeoprichter van Asaah Events, Diversity in the Beeldcoördinator bij het Da Bounce Urban Film Festival (DBUFF) en programmeur bij World Cinema Amsterdam. Er is ook nog een voorfilm: Baloji's Peau de Chagrin / Bleu de Nuit (2018), en Baloji himself zal aanwezig zijn om zijn muziekvideo te introduceren!

Wat was er eerder: de kip of het ei? In een ooit vredig dorp in Ghana is de discussie zo uit de hand gelopen, dat de dorpelingen besloten een permanente grens in het dorp aan te brengen; zij die tot het 'kip-kamp' behoren, wonen in het blauwe deel, de 'ei-aanhangers' in het gele en die grens mag nooit meer gepasseerd worden. Te midden van al deze perikelen worden de jonge Aloewin en Veralin verliefd op elkaar. Er is echter een groot probleem: hij woont in het blauwe deel, zij in het gele. Het verlangen samen te zijn is echter zo groot dat ze besluiten elkaar in het geheim buiten de grenzen van het dorp te ontmoeten. Als hun ouders, ook nog eens de leiders van beide kampen, dat ontdekken, zijn de rapen gaar. Ze moeten een manier vinden om de twee gemeenschappen bij elkaar te brengen. Kunnen de vijandige groepen één worden door de liefde tussen de twee?
De Ghanese regisseur Peter Sedufia geeft in deze door hemzelf geschreven romantische film een originele wending aan het aloude verhaal van Romeo en Julia, met daarin een kritiek op het tribalisme in zijn land. Aloe Vera werd in 2019 opgenomen in Dabala, in de Voltaregio in Ghana, en ging in 2020 in première in Accra. Deze Africadelic vertoning op World Cinema Amsterdam markeert de Nederlandse première van de film.

The evening will be hosted by Ama van Dantzig, board member at Africadelic and co-founder of Dr. Monk, a social enterprise with offices in both Amsterdam and Accra, and introduced by Nancy Asaah, co-founder of Asaah Events, Diversity in the Picture coordinator at the Da Bounce Urban Film Festival (DBUFF) and programmer at World Cinema Amsterdam. What came first: the chicken or the egg? In a once peaceful village in Ghana, the discussion gets so out of hand that the villagers decide to put a permanent boundary in the village; those who belong to the 'chicken camp', the Aloes, live in the blue part, the 'egg camp', the Veras, in the yellow part, and that border may never be crossed again. In the midst of all these troubles, young Aloewin and Veralin fall in love with each other. However, there is a big problem: he lives in the blue part, she in the yellow. However, the desire to be together is so great that they decide to meet secretly outside the village boundaries. When their parents, who also happen to be the leaders of both camps, discover this, they are in trouble. They must find a way to bring the two communities together. Can the hostile groups become one through the love between the two?
In this romantic film, Ghanaian writer and director Peter Sedufia offers an original twist to the ancient story of Romeo and Juliet, with a critique of tribalism in his country. Aloe Vera was recorded in Dabala, in the Volta region of Ghana, in 2019, and premiered in Accra in 2020. This Africadelic screening on World Cinema Amsterdam marks the film's Dutch premiere.
