“The fight was the main event, but a three-day music festival, called Zaire '74, also took place in Kinshasa, featuring some of the heavyweights of American soul, African pop and Latin-American jazz. It was headlined by the Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown, who was brought to Africa, alongside the Detroit Spinners, Bill Withers and BB King, by the festival organisers, Stewart Levine and South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela. Soul Power tells the story of the festival and its myriad characters in an impressionistic swirl of images and music” (Source: The Guardian).

The music documentary Soul Power tells the story of Zaire 74, the famous music festival in Kinshasa, where both the best musicians from Zaire (now DR Congo) and the greatest soul artists from America of the time performed, including James Brown, the godfather of the soul. The festival, which lasted three nights, was held before the legendary 'Rumble in the Jungle', the boxing match of the century between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. Musician Hugh Masekela and producer Stewart Levine worked together with boxing promoter Don King for this. The idea was to organize a reunion between Africa and the African diaspora, just like the Fesman Festival 1966 in Senegal (which was also the inspiration for Mano to start the Africadelic Festival).
Some images from the festival have previously been featured in When We Were Kings (1996), Léon Gast's Oscar-winning sports documentary. This film focused mainly on the boxing match and left little of the festival, and even less of the African artists who performed. Soul Power is all about the festival and also shows many of the performances of African artists. Not only the boxing match, but also the festival can be seen as one of the most important cultural events ever organized on the African continent.
