Afghanistan Society: AGM and Poetry evening

The Afghanistan Society's 2024 Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place on the 27th June.

We are so pleased to be able to hold this year's AGM in person. Fellow and Director of Studies at Cambridge University, Dr Marissa Quie and her husband have again generously offered to host the AGM in their beautiful Wimbledon house and garden.

We are delighted to announce that we shall be joined by Parwana Fayyaz, the award-winning Afghan-born poet, scholar of classical and medieval Persian literature at the University of Cambridge, and translator. Her poem, ‘Forty Names,’ won the Forward Prize for Single Poem. Titled after this poem, her first collection, Forty Names, published in July 20221, was named the New Statesman Book of the Year and the White Review Book of the Year.

The evening will begin at 6.30pm pm BST and will proceed with the election of the Society's Trustees. In addition to the current Trustees who are up for re-election, there is one new nominee, Rasol Yalaqi. Following the short formal proceedings, Parwana Fayyaz will read her poems and engage with the audience on the importance of Afghanistan literature, poetry and poetics, and writers.

Tickets: Free for members. £10 for guests and non-members.

Tickets will include tea and refreshments, and one free drink from the pay bar which will serve soft drinks and alcohol. Parking is free after 6.00pm, and it is only a short bus ride on number 93 from either Wimbledon or Putney stations for people coming by public transport.

We are happy to be able to offer such a rich and varied programme and we welcome new members and new ideas.
