Aesthetic shivers represents a psychophysiological response to an artistic stimulus (including music, films, stories, people, photos, and rituals), that often induces a pleasurable or otherwise positively-valenced affective state and transient paresthesia (skin tingling or chills). So you’re listening to some stirring music, you feel a strong emotion because of the music, and that emotion is so strong that you have a physiological reaction in the form of piloerection/goosebumps/shivers & mydriasis (pupil dilation).Simply put, aesthetic shivers are a good indicator of openness, meaning that you are likely to love doing things in distinctive, creative, original ways, rather than following the conventional ways of doing things.
The psychological component (i.e., the pleasurable feeling) and physiological components (i.e., paresthesia, piloerection, and pupil dilation) of the response are mediated by the reward system and sympathetic nervous system. The sensation of shivers is sometimes experienced as a series of 'waves' moving up the back in rapid succession and commonly described as "shivers up the spine".
The sensation may be enhanced by the amplitude of the music and the temperature of the environment. Cool listening rooms may enhance the experience.
Curator of the night is none other than George Allen, your local aesthetic shivers therapist.
