About this Event

Advent with Julian of Norwich: Fear, Hope and Love

In 1373 a young woman lay dying and as the priest held a crucifix before her eyes to give her the last rites, she describes how the room darkened and she received a series of sixteen showings that she called a revelation of love. The woman was Julian of Norwich. We would not have known anything about her revelatory experience if she had not then written them down. This Quiet Day focusses on key passages from the long version of her text, Revelations of Divine Love, which address the Advent themes of fear, hope and love. In a world not dissimilar to our own, Julian sought to speak into an age of violence, pandemic, civil unrest and church instability to reassure those who sought God that he was close by them, sharing their sufferings and anguish, but also to reveal the truth of the unending love of Christ in which we can hope, trust and live ‘life in all its fullness’.

The quiet day is led by Canon Emma and held in the Jesus Chapel, in the Eastern Crypt from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday 29th November. With an opportunity to reflect on the beauty of creation and our place within in it using the peaceful space of All Saints Chapel, and the Quiet garden in No 15.

There will be a lunch break during the event; you are welcome to bring your own refreshments to enjoy in the grounds of the Cathedral, or there are many local cafes and eateries to choose from just outside the Christ Church Gate.

The cost of the day is £12. If you are on universal credit or have refugee status, please contact the Events Office directly via [email protected] and they will assist you to access the event for free (upon verification of status).
