Our Advanced Tube Feeding Course introduces, describes and demonstrates the procedures used to tube feed and provide safe oral hydration for parrots, waterbirds, reptiles and other species seen in wildlife rehabilitation. This course extends the skills learned and practiced at the Basic Tube Feeding stage.

Participants will learn how to prepare, clean and maintain syringes and tubes, check patients prior to feeds, administer safe oral hydration, prepare and administer appropriate feeds for different species, provide supplementary nutrition, wean juvenile and adult parrots, administer antifungal treatments under guidance, collect faecal samples for testing, identify and manage crop disease and mentor volunteers completing the Basic Tube Feeding Course. Infection control and record keeping will also be discussed.

This course is designed for
• Kanyana Volunteers who have completed their Basic Tube Feeding Competencies, who have a mentor and whose attendance has been approved by their supervisors
• Wildlife volunteers at other centres, with the equivalent skills and approval
• Vet or vet nurse students who would like to work with wildlife

Kanyana volunteers will need to be guided and progressively signed off by an approved mentor, usually within 3-6 months after the course date (depending on scope for practice). The mentor must have completed the ATF competencies and be able to actively oversee tube feeding practice and progression on shift.
