This course will present current evidence and clinical guidelines for the evaluation and intervention of two specialty populations in specific tracks for individuals pre- or post-lung transplant or the pediatric throwing athlete. This course is designed for licensed physical therapists and has been submitted to the OPTA for 3 CEU hours (approval pending).

Track 1: Physical Therapy for Patients Undergoing Lung Transplantation

This clinical education course explores the guidelines of physical therapy examination and intervention for individuals pre- and post- lung transplant to physical therapists in northeast Ohio. Currently, there is a high volume of lung transplantation programs in Ohio, as well as a lack of lung transplantation in neighboring states, showing necessity for education in this area for physical therapists. Physical therapists should be educated in this patient area due to the probability for encountering this patient population in clinical practice. Common patient diagnoses that will be covered that may require lung transplantation include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, and pulmonary hypertension. This presentation will cover the most up to date literature regarding examination and intervention of patients with the above-mentioned diagnoses with the need for lung transplantation. This course will include a visual and auditory presentation and brief demonstrations to enhance participants' learning. To conclude the course, there will be a question-and answer session to assess participants learning and a post-course survey to assess the course. Completion certificates will be sent out to everyone who attends after the course concludes.

Track 2: Rehabilitation Considerations for the Pediatric Throwing Athlete

This clinical education course offers non-specialized physical therapists’ insight into evaluating and treating various elbow and shoulder pathologies prevalent among adolescent baseball athletes. The course focuses on diagnosing conditions such as little league shoulder, SLAP lesions, little league elbow, and UCL pathology. Given the rise in sport specialization and year-round training, there has been a noticeable uptick in related pathologies among adolescent baseball athletes. These conditions can pose diagnostic and treatment challenges for physical therapists lacking specialized training in sports or orthopedics. The primary objective of this course is to enhance awareness of contemporary best practices supported by current literature, facilitating improved evaluation and treatment outcomes for adolescent baseball athletes. The course structure encompasses auditory and visual presentations, interspersed with demonstrations and opportunities for hands-on practice with the skills introduced. Upon completion of the course, participants will engage in a question-and-answer session to further reinforce learning, followed by a post-course survey designed to gauge the efficacy of the program. Certificates of completion will be issued to all attendees as acknowledgment of their participation.
