Overview

The "Advanced Musical Interface Design and IMU-Driven Composition" program offers a detailed exploration of IMU-based contemporary musical interfaces and related mapping and compositional techniques. Beginning with a foundational study of interface theory, the course examines musical interface design with a particular emphasis on the innovative MetaBow system. Participants will explore the application of data mapping as a key element in compositional processes in Max/MSP through relevant case studies. The program culminates in practical mini projects, providing students with an opportunity to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge in a practical context. This program is designed to equip participants with advanced skills broadening their creative scope and enhancing their academic and professional trajectories in the compositional integration of music technology.

Materials and Format

Max/MSP 8 is required for the class. If the students do not have a valid license, they may visit https://cycling74.com to download the free 30 day trial version.. Additionally, we will supply the files for the MetaBow toolkit, which will serve as a compositional tool for the mini-projects.

Daily Schedule and Learning Objectives

MONDAY - Course Introduction + Interface Theory

Familiarize participants with the course's framework and introduce foundational concepts in interface theory relevant to musical applications.

TUESDAY - Musical Interface Design [MetaBow] + Data as Compositional Material in Max/MSP

Explore the design of musical interfaces with a focus on MetaBow, a sensor-embedded violin bow, and explore the employment of IMU data as compositional material using Max/MSP.

WEDNESDAY - Mappings and Sound Design: Case Studies

Investigate different approaches to mapping in sound design through several case studies, enhancing understanding of practical applications.

THURSDAY - Mini Projects #1

Participants begin to develop their mini projects, applying the discussed conceptual frameworks.

FRIDAY - Mini Projects #2 + Performance

Continue and finalize mini projects, preparing for presentation and discussion.
