Thor & Friends

Polymath percussionist Thor Harris inaugurated “Thor & Friends” in 2015 after five years of touring as the percussionist of iconic avant-rock ensemble Swans. The project is intended as a vehicle for experimentation with the conceptual vocabulary of American Minimalism collaborating with a rotating cast of Austin-based musicians.

Thor & Friends draws on classic Minimalist composers, including Terry Riley and Steve Reich, but also amalgamate such diverse influences as Brian Eno, Aphex Twin, Moondog and The Necks around a polyrhythmic core of mallet-struck instruments, primarily marimba, xylophone and vibraphone. Circling these core motifs are shifting streams of everything from processed pedal steel and analog synthesizer to violin, viola, stand-up bass, clarinet, duduk and oboe.

Being Dead

Being Dead takes a fresh look at hell through the eyes of multi-instrumentalists Juli Keller and Cody Dosier. Hailing from Austin, they’ve won over the hearts and minds of everyone from the misfits to the mainstreams. Smart and poignant, these two explore themes of crime, god, beauty, freedom, existentialism, and unadulterated joy through wickedly clever lyrics cloaked in sublimely lumbering harmonies, low-fidelity experimentalism, and postmodern pop. That’s not all. These deviants shred. No speaker is safe, no mind is spared when Juli, Cody, and bassist Nicole Roman-Johnston take the stage. Swapping instruments throughout their set, they command the attention of even the most passive concertgoer, always recruiting new blood into their cult of cerebral proclivities and rock n’ roll sensibilities. In short, Being Dead rips.

Font

The genesis of Font is nothing short of enigmatic. Sparse social media posts and a notable absence from major streaming services generate intrigue for the elusive and rarely performing fivepiece. Their music is less opaque: relentless post-punk with New Wave keyboards and arty, personality-driven singing. In a gleaming salute to Bauhaus and Echo & the Bunnymen, singer Thom Waddill's vocal flux ranges from vibrato trills to commanding shouts atop a defiant tempo propelled by guitarist Anthony Laurence's eccentric sampler use and Roman Parnell's punching bass. Jack Owens' drumming bolsters the beat poetry rhythm in "I hate looking at engines," while the auxiliary percussion and noise overlays of Logan Wagner brings each melody to a fever pitch. Font believes that "the medium is the message," where their music can give meaning to things they wouldn't otherwise be able to express, culminating in this radical act being a favorite amongst other musicians in the underground scene. - written by Mars Salazar for the Austin Chronicle
