The suburb looms large in the physical and imaginary landscape of this country, a loaded repository of hopes and aspirations. In his long anticipated memoir, Out of Copley Street: A Working Class Boyhood, Geoff Goodfellow deploys clear lucid prose to describe the South Australian suburbs that forged him. Christopher Raja was eleven when he settled in the Melbourne suburbs, a world away from the teeming streets of Kolkata from whence he came. He describes the culture shock and the life he built in Into the Suburbs: A Migrant’s Story.
Geoff Goodfellow's recent memoir Out of Copley Street: a working-class boyhood, his first book of prose, has been warmly endorsed by Tim Winton and Helen Garner. A world-renowned poet, his new poetry collection, Preparing for Business (endorsed by Hunters & Collectors frontman, Mark Seymour) is released February 2021, for Writers Week. His collection Poems for a Dead Father was shortlisted for the Age Book of the Year award in 2002. His poems have appeared in Best Australian Poetry (2009) and in Best Australian Poems four times.
Christopher Raja is the author of the memoir, Into the Suburbs: A Migrant's Story (UQP, 2020). He co-authored the play The First Garden with Natasha Raja, which was performed in botanical gardens throughout Australia and published by Currency Press in 2012. His debut novel, The Burning Elephant, was published in 2015 (Giramondo). It was written with the assistance of an Australia Council New Work grant. Christopher lived in the Northern Territory for 12 years and has been twice shortlisted for its Chief Minister’s Book of the Year award. Raja migrated from Calcutta to Melbourne in 1986.
Royce Kurmelovs is a journalist and writer whose work has been published by the ABC, CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera English, VICE, and The Guardian. Royce's bestselling first book, The Death of Holden, was published in 2016, followed by Rogue Nation and Boom and Bust. His new book is Just Money.
