About this Event
The 2024 election will be a critical opportunity for climate activists to push for pro-climate policies and candidates. Winning over voters and increasing turnout will be essential. A significant challenge in this election will be combating sexist, racist, and anti-immigrant rhetoric that seeks to undermine pro-climate efforts. It's crucial to navigate these biases and create space for rational political discourse that encourages thoughtful consideration rather than reactionary or oppressive responses. This workshop will explore why we struggle to interrupt oppressive comments and discussions, and what tools we need to do so effectively.
In this workshop we will:
1. Share the information that SAL/UER has gathered about the origins of people’s oppressive behaviors and language
2 Give people a chance to look at their own hurtful experiences with these oppressive behaviors and language both as the target and as agent.
3. Demonstrate how these hurtful experiences interfere with our ability to take on these behaviors/language and offer tools for healing these hurts.
4. Offer the tools that SAL/UER has developed to assist people to listen to as well as interrupt a person using oppressive language
Join us for an engaging and interactive session aimed at fostering a more equitable and respectful political discourse as we navigate this pivotal election period. Together, we can make a difference in ensuring that all voices are heard and valued, and candidates are not discounted because of racism, sexism or anti-immigrant sentiments.
