This session will also cover the importance of planning ahead with an Enduring Power of Attorney—what it is, why it matters, and how it helps ensure your financial decisions are carried out according to your wishes if you ever become unable to manage them yourself. EVENT SCHEDULE
1:45 to 2:30 p.m. – Understanding Dementia & Early Detection
Presented by Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories
In this first session, the Alzheimer Society introduces what dementia is, how it differs from normal aging, and how conditions like Alzheimer’s disease affect memory and daily life. Participants will learn to recognize early warning signs and understand key risk factors, including age, family history, health conditions, and lifestyle influences. The importance of early detection for timely support and planning will also be highlighted.
2:30 to 3:15 p.m. – Reducing Risks, Promoting Brain Health & Accessing Support
Presented by Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories
Part 2 focuses on practical ways to support long-term brain health. We will explore the key risk factors associated with dementia, lifestyle approaches that can help reduce risk, and the importance of social connection, exercise, and overall wellness. Participants will also be introduced to the free programs and services offered by the Alzheimer Society, including the First Link® Program for individuals and families seeking guidance and support.
3:30 to 4:15 p.m. – Enduring Powers of Attorney – Why you should care?
Presented by Venture Law Group LLP
This estate planning document is important because it controls your money when you can’t. You have to imagine what you would want to do and then authorize money for that purpose. Do you want to continue travelling? You’ll need money for that. Do you want to “age in place”? You’ll need money for that. Come to learn more.
